CASTLE RAT "THE BESTIARY"
SANGRE, FUZZ Y FANTASIA OSCURA
ENGLISH VERSION:
The new work of the New York band formed in 2019 presents itself as ritualistic and suffocating. A performance art band, they classify themselves as "Medieval Fantasy Doom Metal."
A striking 70s aesthetic or as if they stepped out of a Frank Frazetta painting, each playing a role within the realm "The Realm."
Their music is that fusion of traditional heavy metal with old-school doom, a love letter with heavy, slow riffs reminiscent of Black Sabbath, the atmosphere of Pentagram, and that magnificent stoner fuzz touch of Electric Wizard, led by Riley Pinkerton (The Rat Queen). This mage started as a folk singer before deciding she wanted to wield a sword and love metal. She designs much of the band's wardrobe and mythology herself.
Franco Vittore (guitar) with a vampiric aesthetic
Charley Ruddell (bassist) Doctor Plague
Joshua Strmic (drummer)
Madeline Wright. She is the arch-enemy who appears at concerts to fight with swords against the Rat Queen.
Her first album, "Into Realm" (2022), caused a great stir mainly because of its aesthetic and the track "Dagger Dagger," which unveiled an epic tragedy of a demon hunter with purely doom, heavy sounds and the iconic Riley delivering judgment from her throne. It was recorded in a 150-year-old abandoned church in Philadelphia, giving it that natural, dark resonance.
THEATER AND POWER
The sonic grimoire arrives with her latest album, "The Bestiary," exploring beasts and horrors that inhabit the world, sounding dense, loaded with distortion and fog, transporting you to castles and their dungeons. Sounds from the '70s and much more technical than her debut album, with funeral march instrumental pieces. "Wolf I," "Wizard," "Siren," "Unicorn," or "Dragon" is a sonic catalog of creatures and demons that dwell in the "Rat Kingdom," achieving an expedition into the darkest parts.achieving an expedition into the darkest part of mythology or Fantasy Doom.
Each track is a page from a spellbook marked by that technical and psychedelic evolution where we find melodic beauty, and Riley's voice becomes more versatile under a raw production of intense and visceral psychedelia. The most acidic track is a war anthem, "Serpent," dense and sticky with psychedelic doom and a whisper in a dark cave from the mistress of the dark arts. The quintet has become a cultural phenomenon, making Sludge and Doom visual and theatrical, entering a genuinely spectacular artistic universe. For lovers of B-movies, comics, immersive sounds, and anyone who wants to create characters in a parallel world and travel to imaginary worlds.
"Magic has a price, and sometimes it is paid with blood in the Kingdom of the Rat" (Dungeons & Dragons).
